General Information
The O Line Mysteries (OLM) is the first of four original scripted podcast audio shows in Billibatt’s Commuter Companion Series.
The OLM shows are approximately 25 minutes in length and are formatted in the Golden Age of Radio Serials style with opening and transitional music and sound effects. Delivered each Sunday, the “season” features 32 weeks of original show content. The OLM are free and made available for download from the OLM website using RSS feeds and Quicktime streaming. They are also available on iTunes and most podcast aggregators.
The OLM has a unique market position because it is an original scripted podcast specifically designed for commuters and mp3 owners. Currently, as many as 22 million Americans* now own mp3 players and as technology expands the number of owners will only grow in the future. As different demographics begin to enter the mp3 market the need for various programming will become acute – Billibatt proposes to meet that need by reinvigorating the radio fiction series.
*According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
Background
The idea of the Commuter Companion Series was born out of commuting on public transit. We, the producers, had “reality burnout” and desperately needed some light fiction, but listening to a book was too much of a commitment on a 20 minute commute. We couldn’t find any fun, light, character based fiction that was free and mp3 downloadable.
We created The OLM with certain features in mind: a free mp3 downloadable show with original content that was a light hearted diversion during a commute. This is not to say that our audience is limited to commuters as we learned with a reviewer from iTunes who listens to the show while working out at the gym.
The O Line Mysteries follow the ‘cozy’ mystery format typified by Nancy Drew or Agatha Christie. The lead characters are the ‘Laverne and Shirley’ of mystery and the town citizens can be found in Anywhere, USA. The characters drive the stories and the plots are diversionary stories that spotlight day to day topics typically found in local newspapers. For example, the first episode featured fraud at the town museum by a volunteer docent.
Writer and Producer
Saylor Billings is a veteran stage producer and director helping deliver productions for Comedy Central, HBO and NBC. Beginning her professional career in New York City as the production manager for PSNBC at HERE Arts Center in Soho and moving on to comedy productions in Aspen, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. After relocating to the Island City of Alameda outside San Francisco, she produced a documentary for the cable provider based on and starring Phyllis Diller, which now runs in the island’s history museum. She began writing The O Line Mysteries in July of 2008 as a writing exercise before she realized it would make a viable podcast.
Dipping their hand into the honey pot of improv players, veteran radio personalities and eager acting novices from San Francisco, the producers have assembled the principals and a rotating cast of characters to populate the fictional town of Ohlone.

Target Audience
It would be a broad statement to say our audience is anyone with a computer or mobile listening mp3 who downloads his or her entertainment. But it’s true.
The O Line Mysteries is a great way to reach the same audiences who watch Pushing Daisies, CSI, Ugly Betty or Murder, She Wrote reruns on television; read or have read Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie, or any of the current cozy novels. According to the iTunes page, our listeners also subscribe to NPR’s Fresh Air, Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, and Car Talk. (I’ll be honest, the Car Talk threw us off too.)
In reaching our perceived target audience and growing our audience base we remain active in our marketing efforts both on and off the internet, through a constant web presence, through more conventional viral marketing campaigns.
Our Unique Position
What sets The OLM apart in the podcast market is its original fiction mp3 that is professionally mastered and free to the audience.
We developed the shows website around the episodes, giving listeners a place to go to learn more about the show, the fictional town of Ohlone Island, the character’s, and the cast.
Like many of the first television shows currently we are not associated with any large media conglomerates and the show is not a marketing tool to drive traffic to other websites. Instead, we are listed on podcast aggregator sites which drives traffic to our site.
There is a 32 show publishing schedule, this sustainability in our niche market is a planned strategy to build and hold the audience.
Our unique position rises organically out of our own needs. We grew tired of the “how-to”, shock jock, “reality”, and blog styled podcasts and wanted a quick bite of refreshing light-hearted fiction for our commutes. We wanted a diversion.
